Overview

Object type: Lintel [1][2]

Measurements: H. 59 cm (23.25 in); W. 119 cm (47 in); D. 16 cm (6.5 in)

Stone type: Greyish pink (5R 8/2), pebbly, poorly sorted, clast-supported, quartz sandstone. The sub-angular to sub-rounded clasts range from fine-grained (0.2 mm) to very coarse-grained (2.0 mm), but are mostly medium- to coarse-grained in the range 0.4 to 1.0 mm. A few scattered white feldspar pebbles up to 0.8 mm. Ward's Stone Sandstone Formation, Millstone Grit, Carboniferous. (N.B. Differs considerably in grain size from Heysham 16.)

Very weathered and worn

Description

The arched head of the door is cut from a single stone which is itself roughly arched but with a flat head. The only decoration now visible is a single relief moulding following the contour of the arch.

Discussion

See Heysham 16. This (now) internal face is very worn and may originally have been set externally as the west door of the eighth-century phase 1 building (Potter and Andrews 1994, 72).
