Stone type: Pale yellowish grey (10YR 8/2) oolite, evenly graded, with a calcite matrix containing closelyset ooliths, mainly of 0.4mm diameter with some of 0.6mm, in places shown only by their vacated sockets, together with a few 2 to 3mm shell fragments. This piece has been trimmed on all sides so that the pattern is not complete.
A: Remains of six registers of turned pattern F knots, joined by long diagonals. The strands are median-incised and about 15 mm wide. All other faces are built into the wall.
This is a competent piece of carving, and the neat incised strands are comparable with the best early work such as East Stour or Gillingham 1 (Ills. 58, 67). Pattern F is fairly frequent in this region, but is usually found in rows of simple patterns as on Ramsbury 1 or Dolton (Ills. 489, 20).
