Description

A: A flat-band moulding forming a corner encloses part of an interlaced pattern with median-incised strands. The corner is filled by a knot from which two strands separate and cross, one passing under a curving moulding in the centre, which could have enclosed a circular feature which is now chipped away.

B: Semi-circular groove runs from outer face into the stone.

C–E: Broken away

F: A flat-band moulding on one edge encloses two median-incised crossing strands of what seems to be an interlace pattern.

Discussion

The original form of this piece is uncertain — it may have been part of a cross-shaft but it could have been part of a grave-cover. The interlace is quite competently carved in a good over-and under technique, but the piece is too fragmentary to say anything conclusive.
