Church Dedication

Present Condition
A hogback with part of one end-beast lost; worn
Description
The ridge issues from the end-beast's jowl; it has traces of chevron pattern that might have been a double cable.
A (long) : The centre of the side is filled by a bold ring-knot consisting of a twin-link (closed circuit pattern B) locked in a circle. Of one end-beast only the forelegs remain; its twin is bear-like, though very worn. The nostrils are drilled and the jaws are shown by a slit. There are traces of a muzzle. The paws have five toes and extend far into the centre where they touch the ridge. The section of the stone is steeply pointed and off-centre.
C (long) : As face A, but badly damaged.
Discussion
Modelled on the panel type hogback (type a), this monument is unique in its use of a solitary ring-knot of this form. It is a simplified version of interlace and one suspects the law of minimum effort in operation (Lang 1984a, 106).
Date
First half of tenth century
