Description

A (broad): Decorated with an irregular, asymmetrical, pattern comprising loops and interlace strands which do not appear to have formed part of a regular pattern. It is badly eroded to the extent that some of the detail is missing.

B (narrow) and C (broad): Plain, or more probably dressed-off

D (narrow): Inaccessible

Discussion

This piece is decorated with an abstract array of loops and strands forming no discernible pattern. There are several examples of such irregular designs in the region: at Chebsey (1), Staffordshire, for example (Ills. 515-18), and in neighbouring Cheshire, at Cheadle (1) or Prestbury (1–2) (Bailey 2010, 60–2, 95-7, ills.71–4, 230–7), all of which have been dated to the period of Scandinavian settlement in the region.
