Description

23a. String Course

The string course running around the north, east and south faces of the porticus, extending onto the central body of the east end of the nave, consists of a continuous narrow stone band, square in profile and standing proud of the surrounding fabric, on which stand the pilasters (23b)

23b. Pilasters and capitals

The pilasters set above the string course running around the north, east and south faces of the eastern porticus, survive intact on the north and south faces, and in part on the east face, where their lower parts and the string course on which they stood were lost when the east window was inserted, probably in the fourteenth century. They comprise thin strips of rectangular stone standing proud of the surrounding fabric and terminate below the eaves of the present roof in capitals that flare upwards from a basal roll and are topped by a thin stone band.

Discussion

There has been considerable discussion of the date of the decorative features articulating the eastern porticus (see e.g. Taylor 1987, 243) but the most likely explanation of them is that they represent the rebuilding and heightening of the eastern end of the church that occurred following the damage suffered to the building in the later ninth century.

Date
Tenth to eleventh century
