RF 3223, found during archaeological excavations in 1982 in the vicarage garden in Trench 8, Feature 936, a ?Victorian flower-bed. For the probable original context of this fragment, see Chapter V, p. 58.

Description

A (broad): The carving consists of two strands of interlace, one vertically aligned, the other horizontal; the former overlying the latter. Both are finely dressed, and the minute area of ground is likewise finely dressed.

B–D: Broken

Discussion

Insufficient remains to draw any conclusions concerning the date of this fragment, but the high quality and deep relief of the strands of interlace indicates that it was once part of a well-executed sculptural monument.
