Object type: Part of grave-cover
Measurements: L. 44 cm (17.3 in); W. 32 > c. 30 cm (12.6 > 11.8 in); D. 14 cm (5.5 in)
Stone type: Very pale orange (10YR 8/2), matrix-supported, shelly oolite. Ooliths range from 0.2 to 0.8 mm, but are mostly between 0.3 and 0.6 mm diameter; they are hard to distinguish from the sub-rounded shell fragments; they form about 25% of the rock. Most ooliths have fallen or weathered out to give an 'aero-chocolate' texture. Shell fragments, including cidarid spines, mostly sub-rounded up to 2 mm across, but a few platy fragments constitute about 50% of the rock. Ardley Member? White Limestone Formation, Great Oolite Group, Jurassic.

Incomplete grave-cover with interlace, background cut back 0.8 cm. Upper end and left side missing.
A (top): The broad, flat interlace is bounded by simple squared edge mouldings.
B (long): Surviving side face bears 'opposed' diagonal tooling in a parquet pattern.
F (bottom): The back is covered in secondary fine tooling.
The design on this stone seems to consist of a rather crudely executed mirror-image interlace. A short, pointed 'spur' grows out of a U-bend in the interlace and points into the right-hand lower corner. The remains of a matching 'spur' survives on the left of the stone, although the edge of the stone on this side is now missing. These 'spurs' might be seen as vestigial limbs, but they are more likely to be loose ends that have not been doubled-back into the interlace.
