Appendix C item (lost stones for which no illustration has survived)

See also Ribchester 1 above (p. 236). 'A small cross, with a ball in front, was recently [my italics] found in Ribchester churchyard and now stands at Lovely Hall, in Salesbury, which closely resembles those in Whalley churchyard' (Baines 1831–6, iii, 383). Lovely Hall is at SD 679335; Edwards (B. 1978a) reported a vain search for a carving at this site. It is perhaps possible that this boss-decorated cross-head should be identified with Ribchester 1 above, though the claimed find-spots differ (p. 236, Ills. 635–9). Cross-heads with boss decoration are a common type within the region.
