Evidence for Discovery
Possibly the 'very small fragment' said by Haigh (1877, 416) to have come from the fifteenth-century foundations of the same wall as Thornhill 3.
Church Dedication
St Michael and All Angels
Present Condition
Unknown. It appears to have had carving on only one face.
Description
A tiny fragment with pattern A or C interlace loops.
Discussion
This was later reconstructed by Collingwood (1929, 33–4, fig. on 34) as part of the grave slab or shaft, Thornhill 1. The small scale of the pattern suggests it might rather be part of the head of a cross.
Date
Probably ninth century
