Evidence for Discovery
Haigh (1879a, 209) mentioned a dial here, of which he had seen a rubbing, apparently preserved in the vestry — he describes it as a relic of an earlier church. He says that it was very rudely executed, with 'no features of particular interest', and insufficient evidence to show if its layout was vertical or horizontal. Collingwood (1915a, 218) merely reported that it was thought to be pre-Conquest by Haigh, without further comment or indication that he had seen it.
