Description

A (broad): Decorated with a curved flat moulding and two modelled strands which flare out towards the break on the right-hand side.

Discussion

Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date)

The stone is too fragmentary to interpret the nature of the decorative scheme, although the flared aspect of the two strands terminating on the left at the flat moulding is reminiscent of the arm of a cross-head curving round the cusped arm-pits. Whether it dates to the pre-Conquest period is unclear and perhaps doubtful. Ryder (2016, 33) includes it in his post-Conquest corpus of medieval cross-slabs in Derbyshire, and it is similar to the cross-heads found for example, here at Bakewell (ibid., 14, 20, fig. 17) or at Darley Dale (ibid., 57, 61, fig. 3).
