Overview
Present Location
Unknown. Stolen from display case in church c. 2002. The drawing published here was done by the present author before the theft.
Evidence for Discovery

None. An undated note from Percy Blair in the Romilly Allen collection attached a rough sketch of this fragment with the comment that it was in Berkeley church (London, British Library, Add. MS 37550, no. 502); the fragment must have been discovered before Romilly Allen's death in 1907.

Description

Fragment with two faces decorated with median-incised interlace. The 'background' is cut back 1.5 cm (0.6 in), and there are traces of fine-pointed tooling on the background areas. Each face has a simple square-profile border 2 cm (0.8 in) wide.

A: Probably a six-strand, median-incised interlace with diagonal strands and asymmetrical loops within a surrounding loop.

B: Small fragment of median-incised interlace.

Discussion

This lost fragment was part of a cross-shaft. The decoration is well executed and carefully laid-out. In this area, this is probably indicative of a ninth-century rather than later date.
