The slab carries a full-length relief cross with a single step base; the head is of type A/D11.
Large recumbent slabs ornamented with crosses carved in relief are known from the eighth and ninth centuries in Northumbria (Cramp 1984, 7; Lang 2001, ill. 1044). No other surviving slab in northern England seems to carry a cross-head of form A/D11, though the type is known to the east of the Pennines both at a pre-Viking date at Lindisfarne and Norham, and among the Durham revival material of the early eleventh century (Cramp 1984, pls. 44.206, 45.209–10, 195.1101, 206.1186).
[1] The difficulties of distinguishing between the original provenances of sculpture from this site have been emphasised by recent excavations (Potter and Andrews 1994, 104, and fig. 2). The following list therefore combines material from both St Peter's church and St Patrick's chapel.
