Description

This fragment consists of the central flattish boss of a large cross-head, surrounded by a double roll moulding. Two depressions in the centre, not recorded by Brigg (1908, pls. on 170), or Collingwood (1915a, 197, fig. b), are possibly recent damage. There is a dowel hole, parallel to the face, presumably to attach the head to the shaft. The sides and back of the piece are all missing.

Discussion

The encircled boss is found in Anglian-influenced sculpture, but the absence of any further ornament makes dating very difficult. There is nothing to suggest that this is removed from the dating ascribed to other stones from this site.

Date
Probably tenth century
