Description

A (broad): Corner of a panel which is edged by a flat-band moulding enclosing a narrower inner moulding, which frames a narrow pointed loop crossed by a double contoured ribbon-animal body with diagonal hatching. The body expands to a width of 3.7 cm.

B and C: Broken away

D: The wide flat-band edge moulding survives, enclosing an anonymous strand.

Discussion

This could be part of a shaft or of a panel. It is also a matter of uncertainty as to which way up this piece should be viewed, since the expansion of the body could be towards a head with a tapering tail, or, like Glastonbury 2 (Ill. 228), this could be part of the neck of a beast.

Date
Eighth / ninth century
