Stone type: Well bedded fine-grained deltaic sandstone. Colour difficult to assess because of dirt and lichen cover. Probably a light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4). This rock has well-defined limonite bands parallel to the top surface, colour dark brown (10YR 4/3). This is deltaic sandstone from the Saltwick formation, probably obtained from the top of the Cleveland Hills escarpment above Swainby. (The regalis via track, which goes southwards via Swainby and Osmotherley, also passes through Crathorne.)

Stepped cross-base, formed from a single stone with a slightly bowed outline.
Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date).
Undecorated cross-bases like this are difficult to date, but one may compare Gilling West 11 (Ill. 1141) which is of similar proportions. A stepped base of this type supports the Gosforth cross in Cumbria (Bailey and Cramp 1988, 100, ills. 292–5).
