Discussion

A similar head, carrying minimal decoration, is known at Bromfield (no. 1); the hammerhead shape of the latter monument and the parallel provided by Carlisle 4 suggest that this form of decoration may be of the Viking period. The possible links between the Carlisle head and the spiral-scroll school argue in the same direction.
