Discussion

Appendix D item (plain cross-bases)

The piece has been regarded as Anglo-Saxon, a date which appears to be without foundation. It is possibly one section of a large stone column of indeterminate date, although that it was originally part of a Roman or medieval building component appears feasible. That the piece is said to be Anglo-Saxon appears to stem from local tradition which attributes the cross to Lady Godiva, although no evidence exists to link the two.
